NAACP Broome-Tioga statement 3 4 2025

Blessings,

The vision of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights and there is no racial hatred or racial discrimination. We remain committed to this vision in the face of great odds. We recognize that equal rights are not freely given but must be taken by those most severely impacted. Dr. King stated, “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.”

Today, the Broome-Tioga branch of the NAACP stands in solidarity with J.U.S.T. as they demand justice for victims of the prison-industrial complex. It is a misconception that justice-involved individuals deserve the treatment they receive, because the truth is that ALL people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Inhumane treatment should never be regarded as the cost for a second chance.

The NAACP, in partnership with J.U.S.T., urges everyone to reach out to their county legislator and local officials, asking them to fully implement the HALT Law to safeguard the rights and well-being of incarcerated individuals. We have a moral obligation to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves. The Bible teaches us, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

When we begin to recognize the humanity in each individual, regardless of their history, then we will witness a day when a person’s past won’t determine their future.
